This week instead of a rant I’m going to muse on something that happens to most of us who read tons of books. It can happen at any time without warning, and when it does…it’s downright scary…
Just as authors face writers block… sometimes a reader can experience readers block. This is especially true if you always read the same genre, and if you’re like me and read one book right after another. Obviously, since I’m a romance book blogger that’s what I normally read. It helps that there’s a pretty good variety within the genre…contemporary adult/new adult, YA, paranormal, suspense, historical, erotica…
Still, sometimes I hit a dead end. Yup, once in a while even I need a break from swoony guys, and hot sex. Did I just hear a collective gasp of astonishment and a few “O, no she didn’t?”
It’s true…as much as I adore them there comes a time wherein I have to change things up. I know it’s not just me ‘cuz I see it on twitter, facebook, and goodreads…peeps bemoaning that all the books they read are starting to seem the same…they’ve reached the plateau, the meh stage. My advice when asked is simple. Put down the romances and pick up something completely different. I’m inclined to choose mystery/crime/thriller books. Take it from me…nothing cures a romance hangover better than murder and mayhem. A book or 3 later, and I’m jonsing for heartache and HEA’s again.
Recently this did indeed happen to me, and I chose to read an old favorite. It’s called Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt. There’s also a movie btw that I loved, and I’ve visited the Mercer Williams House in Savannah, Georgia where the story takes place. It’s a book I’d really recommend if you’re in a reading rut and want to try something different.
Next time you’re feeling blah about the books you’re reading…try something else entirely. It works…then you’ll be all ready to head back into the wonderful world of soul searing kisses and…well…you know…HOT SEX!
